The Gordon Riots

The huge riots that engulfed London in June 1780 are today a little known part of our national history. Starting as a protest over religious issues, they soon became a general assault on the institutions of the state. Our display tells of this remarkable story and some of the colourful personalities involved. Perhaps of some topical interest following events in British cities last August with some thought-provoking parallels.

March & April events:

World Book Day Thursday 1st March

During that week we will be promoting Bookstart packs and the Bookstart Crawl scheme at all our regular events and holding a special ‘stories’ event on Saturday 3rd March

Fairtrade Fortnight 27th Feb to 11th March

At 2.30pm on Saturday 3rd March Fiona will be reading various stories, including a Charlie & Lola one, to celebrate both World Book Day and Fairtrade Fortnight in the library.

Family Fun: There will also be some delicious goodies to try including bananas dipped in chocolate and florentines.

Also, around the Upper Norwood Triangle, various celebratory Fairtrade events will be happening on this day, too, so there’s lots of reasons to be in the area and sample all the Fairtrade goodies.

Chocolate Easter Bunny Decorating

Saturday 31st March at 2pm and 3.45pm

Monday 2nd April at 2.30pm

Tuesday 3rd April at 2.30pm.

Your favourite Easter fun event will be taking place over 3 days this year to give more children a chance to take part. Each session will last for an hour and all children aged 4 or older can take part but they must book and pay for their place first. Tickets cost £2 and are available at the Enquiry Desk on the main counter. Please note there will be only 10 places per session so it is essential to book and pay in advance as this is always a very popular activity.

Celebrates National Library Day

Saturday 4^th February

 Instigated by Alan Gibbons, a kind supporter of our library who has visited us several times, to celebrate the contribution libraries make to the community.

For this special day we are organising some fun things for you to enjoy. Including:

Prize Draw – for a week of free DVD and Music loans. The winner will be drawn from the library card numbers used to issue items on the day.

 A ‘post-it’ board for library users to write their well wishes for this library and/or libraries in general, which will be photographed for our archives to mark the occasion and record the names of people who used this library on this special National Libraries Day 2012

Kate will be here with her Usborne bookstall.
There will be the Usborne duck treasure hunt for children under 5 along with other Treasure Hunts for 5 to 8 year olds and for children aged 9 and over.

 A book review competition for adults – best one wins a prize. The top 20 reviews will be posted on our website for other library users to read.

 Word search puzzles for adults

 Word search fun for children 5-8 yrs – plus draw your favourite book character on the reverse of the sheet – top three get published on our website

Word search fun for children 9-11 yrs – plus write a poem about this library or libraries in general, or, write a review of your favourite book – top three poems and reviews will be published on our website.

Word search fun for children 12-14 yrs – plus write a review of your favourite book, or write a poem about libraries, or re-design the book cover for ‘My so-called afterlife’ by Tamsyn Murray – top three reviews, poems and book covers will be published on our website.

Come and listen to one of Mr Dahl’s funniest tales – ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ – read by Dan Swinton.

Dan will also dramatise a traditional tale for National Library Day and to celebrate National Storytelling Week. Open to children aged 5 or above and their parents.
Free event, although donations are always appreciated.

The Wonderful World of Roald Dahl

Come and listen to one of Mr Dahl’s funniest tales – ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ – read by Dan Swinton. Dan is a local story-teller and dramatist who is giving these readings free of charge, although your donations for the library activities are always appreciated. For children aged 5 upwards and accompanying parents.

Usborne Book Fair

Thank you all of you who bought books from Kate in 2011. The library has been given £320 of free books for everyone to borrow as a result of your purchases. There will be various reduced price books, card games and activities on the Saturday 21st January book stall.
